HowItWorksLab is an interactive explainer site. We open up everyday machines, hidden systems and physical principles and show them part by part, step by step â so anyone can follow along without an engineering degree.
Every explainer is built around a single, carefully simplified diagram. You can press play and watch a process unfold in order, click individual parts to see what they do, and read a plain-language breakdown of what is actually happening inside. Where a physical system follows a rhythm â a fluid moving, a cycle repeating, a force transferring â the diagram is built to make that rhythm visible.
Our content is organized into a handful of categories: machines, systems, physics, simulators, small science games, an SVG diagram shop and a backstage lab blog. They are designed to link into each other, so a diagram of a pump can point you to the principle of pressure that drives it.
We draw everything ourselves as clean, inline vector graphics and animate them with lightweight, dependency-free code. There are no external frameworks, no tracking scripts and no third-party assets in the diagrams. Pages are plain static HTML, which keeps them fast to load and fully readable even if scripting is turned off.
Our guiding rule is simplification for understanding: we keep the outline of a real device so it still looks familiar, strip away the noise, and only leave the parts that matter to the explanation.
The diagrams here are teaching illustrations, not engineering drawings. Real systems carry far more variables, safety margins and complexity than any simplified model can show. Nothing on this site is professional, engineering, financial or medical advice, and it should never be used as a basis for real-world work or decisions.
